Telegram Restrict Saving Content: how owners protect a group or channel, and what it can’t stop
Telegram Restrict Saving Content for owners: how to switch it on, what it blocks, what it can’t stop, and how Disable Sharing works in private chats.

In short
- Only the owner can switch on Restrict Saving Content, and groups and channels don’t need Premium for it.
- Forwards are refused, and Telegram’s apps must also block copying, saving media and screenshots in the chat.
- It can’t stop a camera pointed at a screen, so keep truly sensitive material out of any chat.
Telegram Restrict Saving Content is a switch that only a group or channel’s owner can turn on, with no Premium needed. It stops members forwarding your posts, and Telegram’s apps are also required to block copying, saving media and screenshots in that chat. It can’t stop someone photographing a screen with another device.
What is Telegram Restrict Saving Content?
Restrict Saving Content is Telegram’s content protection setting for groups and channels. Telegram added it on 7 December 2021 for owners “who want to keep their content members-only”: it lets them “restrict message forwarding from their chat, which also prevents screenshots and limits the ability to save media from posts”, in the words of the announcement.
Three points from Telegram’s content protection documentation matter most to an owner:
- Only the owner can change it. The method behind the switch “can only be invoked by the owner of a group/channel”, so admins can’t turn it on or off.
- It’s free for groups and channels. They “can be protected even without a Premium subscription”. Premium is needed only for the private-chat version, Disable Sharing.
- It covers the whole chat. The setting sits on the group or channel, not on each post, and apps must treat every message from a protected chat as protected: “forwards, downloads, copying, screenshots must be disabled”.
The setting works the same way in both kinds of chat. If you’re still deciding which one to run, see how a Telegram group differs from a channel.
Looking for account restrictions instead?
If “restrictions” means your own account can’t message people, that’s an account limit rather than this setting, and how long Telegram limits and freezes last explains it.
How do you turn on Restrict Saving Content in a channel or group?
To stop members forwarding messages from your Telegram channel or group, switch on Restrict Saving Content from the chat’s type screen. Only the owner can save the change, and Telegram’s Android and Desktop apps show that screen only to the owner. Telegram’s 2021 announcement gave the path as the Info page > Group / Channel Type > Restrict Saving Content, and the source code Telegram publishes for its apps, read on 11 October 2026, still puts it there.
Open the edit screen
Open the group or channel, tap its name to open the info page, then tap Edit. On Desktop, open the chat’s ⋮ menu and choose Manage group or Manage Channel; the screen that opens is titled Edit group or Edit channel.
Open Group Type or Channel Type
Telegram’s Android and Desktop code offers this entry only to the owner, so if it’s missing, you’re most likely not the owner: ask the owner to switch it on. On iPhone and iPad, admins who can change the chat’s info may also see the screen, but only the owner can save the change.
Switch on Restrict Saving Content
It has its own heading on the type screen, worded slightly differently in each app (see the table below).
Save and check it took
The change shows in Recent Actions, the admin log, which Telegram Desktop words as “restricted saving content”. Members who try to copy or forward a post see a notice such as “Copying and forwarding is not allowed in this channel.”
The wording below is copied from Telegram’s published source code for each app, as of 11 October 2026. Store builds can lag the published code or run ahead of it, so look for the nearest match.
| App | Heading on the type screen | What the app tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Telegram for Android | Saving content, then Restrict saving content | “Members won’t be able to forward messages from this group or save media files.” |
| Telegram for iPhone and iPad | Saving And Copying Content (channels) or Forwarding From This Group (groups), then Restrict Saving Content | “Participants won’t be able to copy, save and forward content from this group.” |
| Telegram Desktop | Content protection, then Restrict saving content | “Members won’t be able to copy, save or forward content from this group.” |
How do you remove content restrictions from a chat?
To remove the restriction, the owner turns the same switch off, which Desktop’s admin log records as “allowed saving content”. Members can’t lift it themselves: a member who needs a file should ask the owner.
What does Restrict Saving Content stop?
Restrict Saving Content makes Telegram refuse forwards from the chat and tells Telegram’s apps to block saving, copying and screenshots there. Each row below rests on Telegram’s own documentation.
| Action | With protection on | Where Telegram says so |
|---|---|---|
| Forwarding to other chats | Refused by Telegram’s servers | A forward “will emit a CHAT_FORWARDS_RESTRICTED RPC error” |
| Saving photos and videos | Apps must not let members save them | The API documentation: downloads “must be disabled”, and “videos should only be streamed, photos should be kept in RAM” |
| Screenshots | Apps must prevent them | The API documentation: “screenshots must be disabled”; the 2021 announcement says it “prevents screenshots” |
| Copying text | Apps must disable it | The API documentation lists copying among what apps must disable |
| Reading and posting | Unchanged: members read your posts as before | The announcement lists forwarding, screenshots and saving, not reading |
If you want to stop members saving your videos, this is the setting: Telegram’s documentation says videos from a protected chat should only be streamed.
A refused forward comes back as an error rather than failing silently. If you manage tools that forward from other chats, that error and what to do about it are covered in why some Telegram channels can’t be forwarded and why a forward from a channel fails.
What can’t content protection stop?
Content protection can’t stop anyone who can read a post from recording it outside Telegram. It makes a leak harder, not impossible, and Telegram’s own wording is careful: the announcement says it “limits the ability to save media”, not that saving becomes impossible.
- A camera. Telegram’s FAQ says it plainly, in its answer about Secret Chats: “nobody can stop a person from taking a picture of their screen with a different device or an old school camera.”
- Someone retyping or retelling a post. Members can read what you publish, so they can always pass on what it says.
- Copies made before you switched it on. Posts already forwarded and files already saved live outside your chat, beyond the setting’s reach.
Keep the most sensitive material out of the chat
Protection raises the effort a leak takes; it doesn’t make one impossible. If a leak would really hurt, share that material with fewer people, or not at all.
If your posts turn up somewhere else
Telegram’s FAQ gives copyright owners one route: if a public channel, bot, sticker set or other public content infringes your copyright, send a complaint to dmca@telegram.org. Only the copyright owner or an authorised agent should file it, and Telegram says it doesn’t process requests about private groups and chats, which are “private amongst their participants”.
What do you give up when you protect a channel or group?
You give up the easy sharing that helps a chat grow, plus a few conveniences for members and tools. Weigh these before you switch it on:
- Word of mouth through forwards. Forwarding is how members pass a post to friends, and Telegram’s FAQ notes that a channel post’s view counter includes views of its forwarded copies. With protection on, that route closes, so invite people with the chat’s link instead.
- Guest bots in groups. Telegram added guest bots in May 2026: people can call one into a chat by its username even when it isn’t a member. The guest mode documentation excludes “groups/supergroups with content protection” enabled.
- Files to keep. Members can’t save photos, videos or documents to read later, which some audiences expect from a resource channel.
- Your own automation. Telegram’s documentation lists no exception for the chat’s owner, and a well-behaved forwarding tool skips a protected source even when it’s yours (see the last section).
How do you make a no-save private chat on Telegram?
In a one-to-one chat, the setting is called Disable Sharing, and as of October 2026 it needs Telegram Premium. Telegram added it on 1 March 2026: it “restricts message forwarding and prevents screenshots or saving media from the chat”. To turn it on, open the other person’s profile, tap ⋯ or ⋮ and choose Disable Sharing.
Telegram’s API documentation adds rules the announcement leaves out:
- The other person can’t simply switch it off. If you turned it on, their attempt sends you a request instead, which you accept or refuse.
- Requests lapse. An unanswered request expires after a period Telegram’s servers set. The documented default in Telegram’s client configuration is 86,400 seconds, or one day.
- Some chats can’t be protected. Chats with bots and with Telegram’s official support accounts are excluded.
Secret Chats are a separate case: Telegram’s FAQ says messages “cannot be forwarded from secret chats” at all, whatever else you set.
Can you protect a single post or story instead of the whole chat?
Yes, but in a group or channel only a bot can protect a single message. Since Bot API 5.6, released on 30 December 2021, a bot can send a message with protect_content, which the Bot API describes as protecting “the contents of the sent message from forwarding and saving”. Telegram’s documentation says bots can send these protected messages “regardless of the chat-wide protection status”.
Ordinary user accounts can’t do this: the per-message flag “is only usable by bots”. So if you post from the Telegram app, your choice is the whole chat or nothing. If you need some protected posts in an otherwise open channel, the documented route is a bot you run that posts with protect_content. In one-to-one chats, the self-destruct timer is a separate option: Telegram’s FAQ says it is available “for media in private cloud chats”.
Stories have their own protection. A story sent with it carries a noforwards flag, and apps must disable forwards, downloads, copying and screenshots for it. In Telegram for Android’s source code, switching off “Allow Screenshots” when you post a story is what sets that flag.
How should automation tools treat a protected chat?
An automation tool should treat a protected chat as off-limits, whoever owns it. Telegram’s documentation tells every app to handle messages from a protected chat as protected, so a tool that copies posts between chats should read the setting itself and leave those posts alone. Before you connect any copying tool to your chats, check what it does with protected sources.
Dripl’s auto-forwarding, which copies from the groups and channels you pick in a rule, skips posts from a source with content protection on, and single protected posts, which only bots can send. Each one is logged as filtered, with the reason “Source has content protection”, and nothing is sent to any destination. Dripl doesn’t keep the post’s text: the log shows “Text not kept: the source has content protection”, and there is nothing to copy from the log or the export. If Dripl can’t read the source chat’s setting during a check, it sends nothing and reads the same posts again on the next check. A delayed send or a retry that can’t read the setting fails instead of sending.
Dripl makes no exception for owners: if you turn on Restrict Saving Content in your own channel, Dripl rules that copy from it skip every post from then on and log each one as filtered. To publish the same post in several channels you run, schedule it to all of them instead of mirroring one channel into the others. Dripl’s scheduler can send one message to many groups and channels from the chosen account, one send per chat, staggered rather than all at once. The steps for any tool are in how to send one message to several Telegram groups. Those are ordinary posts, so in a protected channel Telegram’s setting covers them like anything else you publish there.

Who can turn on Restrict Saving Content in a Telegram group or channel?
Only the owner. Telegram’s API documentation says the method behind the switch can only be invoked by the owner of a group or channel, and Telegram’s Android and Desktop apps show the Group Type or Channel Type screen, where the switch lives, only to the owner. Admins can’t turn it on or off, so ask the owner if you think a chat needs it.
Do I need Telegram Premium to restrict saving content?
Not for groups and channels. Telegram’s documentation says they can be protected without a Premium subscription, so any owner can switch on Restrict Saving Content at no cost. Premium is needed only for Disable Sharing, the version for one-to-one chats that Telegram added on 1 March 2026.
Does Restrict Saving Content cover posts I published before turning it on?
Yes, for everything still in the chat. The setting belongs to the chat, not to each post, and Telegram’s API documentation tells apps to treat every message received from a protected chat as protected, with no exception for older posts. What it can’t do is recall copies made earlier: anything already forwarded or saved before you switched it on stays where it is. Turn it on before you post material you want to keep members-only.
Can the other person turn off Disable Sharing in our private chat?
Not on their own. If you switched Disable Sharing on, Telegram’s API documentation says their attempt to turn it off sends you a request instead, which you can accept or refuse. A request lapses after a period set by Telegram’s servers, one day by the default Telegram documents. Each change also shows up as a service message in the chat.
Does Telegram tell me when someone screenshots my channel?
Telegram doesn’t describe screenshot alerts for groups or channels. Its FAQ mentions them only in its section on Secret Chats, where Telegram “will try to send a notification if a screenshot is taken”, and even there admits there is no bulletproof way of detecting screenshots on some systems. Content protection works the other way round: Telegram’s apps are meant to stop the screenshot rather than report it, which is why a camera remains the gap.
